Introduction

The Narrative of Names

By Matt Bircher

It is my pleasure to introduce all readers to this blog publication, titled, “The Narrative of Names.” Behind every title or characterization is a name, behind every name is a person, and behind every person is a story. The title of primary focus in this round of interviews is, “coach,” and with it comes a lot of weight. It takes a strong individual to withstand the pressures and responsibilities that are a major aspect of this profession. The four individuals I spoke with share similar qualities, yet maintain different experiences and perspectives that have morphed into complex life lessons for all people to learn from. Each name can be seen posted in the gym, stadium, or field that acted as a home away from home for them throughout their long careers. Lorenzo Jones, Don Hughes, Clay Jordan, and Gaye Hines, have each given so much of themselves to the coaching profession and the long list of sports they have guided along the way. The West Craven High School community has been forever shaped by their generational leadership. My goal with these conversations was to shed light on the many accomplishments that can easily be taken for granted. The ups and downs over the course of a full life and career are very broad and far-reaching. They go well beyond wins and losses, trophies, and team success. The ultimate value can be found in the philosophy, atmosphere, and high standards that these four amazing people established in their programs. Merging my interests of athletics and history fueled my desire to uncover their stories. Creating more awareness around what they have done for their school, particularly the students, athletes, and staff, is what sparked my passion for this project. Whether you consider them to be a coach, teacher, or friend, there is something worthwhile to be discovered in each conversation. I truly do hope you enjoy the stories behind each name and find it both informative and inspiring.
